This is my translation of the Breton folk song "Tri Martalod" (meaning "Three Sailors") [link]. I was pretty fed up to see music videos of this song that had nothing to do with Breton sailors or Newfoundland (such as this one [link]), so I found a translation on the internet, and used that to make a singable English version (note: the original Breton version didn't rhyme, either), so you can understand what the song is actually about.
I took a some liberties with the transtion, though, especially towards the end. First of all, I inserted a new verse between the orginal pendultimate verse and the last verse (And she asked "have we met before?"...). Originally, the part "have we met before" was in the interlude between "And working in the mill...", and "Yes, we've met before...". I also wasn't sure of what "ge" meant in the 'interludes', so I translated it as "yes". In addition, in the original song, the fishermen buy the girl a ring in the marketplace of the city of Nantes in France. Since I found it rather unlikely that a servant girl in Newfoundland could travel to France, I changed the reference to Saint John's instead, since depending where you are in Newfoundland, you can actually go to market in Saint John's. Finally, since the song kind of leaves you hanging at the fishermen talking about the ring in Nantes/Saint John's, I decided to repeat the first verse at the end, to at least have a nice ending.
However, you can't walk to Saint John's where the preview picture was taken! The picture was taken outside of the town of Saint Anthony on the north coast of Newfoundland, which is 500 km away from Saint John's and certainly not in within walking distance! I used a picture from Saint Anthony because I visited the town in July, and it has a kind of sentimental value in my mind. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any of the photos taken during my trip, so I used a stock photo from the internet.
